A FILM BY PETER ROWE
This one-hour film documents and recreates the true essence of Captain Joshua Slocum, the first person to sail alone around the world. Slocum, a naturalized American who was born in Nova Scotia completed his historic circumnavigation in his wooden sloop that he rebuilt from an abandoned derelict sailboat propped up in a field in Fairhaven, MA, U.S.A. The film captures the events of Slocum's life that led to his historic circumnavigation in 1895-1898. The documentary was filmed in New England, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, St. Martin, the Azores and Patagonia. It tells the story of Slocum's life from birth in Nova Scotia, running away to sea as a teenager, through to his success as a celebrated American sea captain, to the end of the age of sail, and his life-changing transformation into a single-handed sailor and writer. Fairhaven's Myra Lopes is interviewed in this film, shown on the Canadian History Channel.
